KUALA LUMPUR: Are efforts to reduce the number of foreign workers in the country an exercise in futility?
From recent developments, it certainly appears more challenging than anticipated. The government has approved 100,000 applications for new foreign workers since October, following appeals from several manufacturing companies. The applications were approved for the electronic, plastic, furniture and glove industries, said Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam.
He said the government was forced to approve the permits as the companies could close shop and relocate if the applications were rejected.
